This episode was bittersweet, because it was done without our sweetie Rachel. And we’re not at all bitter that she chose to get married and what not instead of doing a podcast 😛. Luv ya, Rachel! Kristen and Zach talked about their various workout milestones in this episode. For Kristen, it was running a half-marathon. (!!!) That’s almost as impressive as getting the PhD, which she’s just about to do. For Zach, it was a 15-mile hike with a large 50-pound bag on his back, even though part of that accomplishment was also coming short of the larger goal of a multi-day camping excursion alone in the woods.
How much do you exercise? Being academics, exercise is often the first thing to go despite the relationship between physical activity and mental health. Zach and Kristen, in this episode, talk about their own struggles with try to get in an adequate amount of physical activity. When work builds up, we both find that exercise and physical activity are the first to go.
Our major feature this episode is an interview that Rachel did with Dr. Emily Rolle before leaving us for her nuptials. In it, Dr. Rolle talks about how she has integrated Yoga and associated mindfulness practices in to her academic experience. She is not only a certified yoga instructor, but also uses it as a pedagogical tool for her classes, tours the country leading yoga-based mindfulness seminars, and has actively worked to integrate it in to her academic publications. Maybe you know someone that needs the kind of “yoga-vention” that she can provide.
Seriously, injecting a little bit of yoga in to your day can do an astonishing amount of good. But moreover, it’s scheduling some time – even just a few minutes a day – for self care that makes the difference in an academic’s quality of life.
Also, Kristen’s dog Leo was a very good boy while we were recording.
